IPOH, April 20 (Bernama) — Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz’s reappointment as Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor will ensure leadership continuity at the central bank, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
He said under Zeti’s leadership, BNM emerged as a strong institution and respected by the banking community not only in Malaysia but also overseas.
“Therefore, she should be given the opportunity to continue leadership at BNM when we are facing a very challenging global economic environment,” he told reporters after launching Malaysia Unit Trust Week 2011 here Wednesday.
He said when the country was being hit by the global economic crisis, the impact was not that severe because of its strong and resilient banking system.
Meanwhile, chairman of the Association of Banks in Malaysia Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar who is also Maybank president and chief executive said the banking community welcomed Zeti’s reappointment.
“We have a high respect for her as she has lifted Malaysia’s image in the global financial system,” he said.
