My visit to Britain came only a month after British Prime Minister David Cameron’s April 2012 visit to Malaysia, reflecting the close relationship and strong historical ties between the two countries. The last Prime Minister to visit was John Major. The Duchess of Cambridge also made her first public comments on foreign soil as the royal couple visited a Malaysian hospice during their Asia-Pacific tour.

Key outcomes:

  • Both countries agreed to double the bilateral trade to eight billion pounds (US$12.74billion) by 2016.
  • Malaysia and the United Kingdom agreed to hold the first joint committee meeting on combating cyber fraud and economic crime.
  • Education – Over 14,000 Malaysian students in the UK and more than 45,000 studying locally for UK qualifications. Both countries recently committed to an enhanced partnership in education and skills training in the form of a Malaysia-United Kingdom Joint Statement in Higher Education
