KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 10 (Bernama) — Umno Supreme Council Member Datuk Mustapha Yaakub urged Umno to continue working hard for the party’s success in the coming general election despite the High Court’s verdict on Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case yesterday.
He said the decision, which acquitted Anwar of the sodomy charges that carries a 20-year prison sentence if convicted, in no way affected Umno or its president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“Don’t be like Anwar who dragged Najib and Umno into his trial. Umno members also need to stop being a ‘yes’ man to Anwar,” he told Bernama here Tuesday.
Mustapha said this was the best time for Umno to meet the people and tell them the truth of the matter.
“All this while Anwar has been saying it was a political conspiracy and that the judge was not qualified to conduct the case, but the decision in his favour clearly proved that his theory was wrong,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cheras Umno Division Chief, Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee upon hearing the verdict announced by High Court judge Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah yesterday, asked if Anwar was prepared to travel around the country and admit that his allegations were not true and that he had lied about the court being unfair.
“They claimed that Umno interfered in the sodomy case, they said the court had previously consented with the ruling party. This has banished any wrong perception by the opposition, especially Anwar, who accused Umno of being linked to his case,” he added.
