KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 (Bernama) — Umno members need to change with the current times which is seeing the party become more democratic, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He said they needed to change in order to convince the post-independence generation.
“Those who were born post-independence didn’t experience the past, they only want to know what Umno is going to do today and in the future, and they don’t like to be reminded to be grateful,” he said during an appreciation dinner for the media which covered the 2011 Umno General Assembly, here, Friday night.
Najib, who is also Umno president, said the party could no longer just lean on its history although it had served the country well because today’s generation could not relate to that.
“Although Umno is excellent and beyond compare, we have to be realistic and look to the future because there are changes in the political landscape of the country and the world,” he said.
Najib emphasised that Umno was politically inspired to be the best party and the nation’s leader after it acquired the people’s trust.
He also urged Umno members to work harder to prove the party was fit to be the premier party in the country.
“I admit there’s still room for improvement apart from rectifying our weaknesses. We can make changes to the party’s constitution which can lead to structural, decision-making and leadership changes.
“But ultimately, the change must be made by Umno members themselves,” he said at the function which was attended by 1,000 guests including media representatives.
Najib further emphasised that the media played an important role in clarifying the message of Umno’s struggle to the people.
According to him, most Malaysian media prioritised the importance of the country’s harmony and stability in their news coverage.
