KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 (Bernama) — Malaysia must create strong brands that are associated with quality for it to compete overseas, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Thursday night.

The Prime Minister said that such brands would reinforce in overseas buyers appreciation of Malaysian products.

“Exporting our branded offerings ..creates a positive identity and builds preference for Malaysian products and services,” he said when opening the Royal Selangor’s flagship store at Pavillion here.

Citing Brands like Royal Selangor and British India, he said these companies have done Malaysia proud by offering not just high quality merchandise, but also high-end brands that are recognised and prized around the world through investment in value-added functions, design and marketing.

“Brands like Royal Selangor have international reputations, which in turn enhance Malaysia’s image as a reliable supplier of quality brands,” he said.

He added that branding is even more urgent today as there are numerous, alternative products from other countries that are competing for the buyer’s attention, a process which is being accelerated by the Internet.

As the nation develops, the Prime Minister said, creative industries help to drive economic growth, especially where they allow us to

Compete by offering value added services and products that attract consumers with their design and not just their low prices.

He said the government encourages Malaysian brand building through various efforts such as the Brand Promotion Grant offered by Matrade.
