KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (Bernama) — Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak Friday lauded the hosting of the International Islamic Tamil Literary Conference here, and said it is timely.
“There is a need to understand one another better, be it among members of the same faith or between people of different faiths,” the Prime Minister said.
“In so doing, a moderate and peaceful approach to appreciate different perspectives is important. It is important now more than ever before,” he added in a special message for the opening of the three-day conference Friday night.
The message was read out by the President of Mahsa Medical College Datuk Mohamed Haniffa Abdullah.
The conference was opened by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop.
Najib hoped that the literary people would “take note of this current need (for understanding each other) and carry the message through various literary forms that reach the people.”
He said that literary works based on Islamic paradigms had enriched languages and Tamil is one of them.
He noted that Tamil was recently conferred the classical language status, and understood that “it is very rich in literary forms and that Muslim poets and epic writers have excelled and have contributed significantly.”
Nor Mohamed, in his speech, said the conference will create renewed interest in literary works on Islam not only in Tamil, but also in Malay and English.
The conference aims to create greater awareness of the contributions of Tamil Muslim writers.
It has about 1,000 participants from around the world, including European countries and the United States.
