The most auspicious day in the Chinese lunar calendar is here to meet us with hope of a better year to come. At this juncture, I bid all Malaysians of Chinese origin, Gong Xi Fa Chai.

It is imperative at times like this to reflect on the year that has just passed and count the blessing bestowed upon us thus far. Despite the transformation advances we have made, we still have a long way to go and much work to do. The transformation programs need support from all walks of life – especially so from the Chinese community who are known for their entrepreneurial skill.

Even as we speak there are countless initiatives being undertaken to improve our livelihood. There are, for example, ongoing programs like BR1M, KR1M, Ops Harga and many others to help mitigate the pinch of global inflationary forces. There are also ongoing consultative meetings and discussions that are focused solely on addressing the issue of easing the rakyat’s burden. Our efforts will go asunder without your support. Together we must remain resilient in the face of economic challenges to sustain stability and progress for our future generation.

While we rejoice in welcoming the year of the horse, we must uphold our unity and racial harmony that we have enjoyed so far. We owe it to the nation to reject any form of threat, violence or any other act of extremism that would strain the harmonious relationship shared and enjoyed by the various races in Malaysia.

I believe we should all listen to the voice of reason. It is therefore incumbent upon us to act sensibly and to listen to each other’s views. In Malaysian’s cultural melting pot, we must respect the rules of law and proceed with sensitivity toward other people’s beliefs.

To this end, my heartfelt appreciation goes to the nation-building role played by the Malaysian Chinese since Independence.

From Putrajaya to all Malaysian homes, I wish you all a very safe and prosperous Chinese New Year.
