Major natural disasters are difficult for any country to avoid as it is usually caused by the forces of nature. Therefore, every nation in the world needs to be thoroughly prepared to face any possibility by ensuring that its people are fully equipped with various safety measures.

Alhamdulillah, major catastrophes seldom strike us unlike in some other countries. Allah Almighty has granted us His abundant blessings, something we can be grateful for. However, each year we are faced with the challenge of the monsoon or rainy season which typically occurs in November and continues until mid-January. This is due to the north eastern monsoon that brings heavy rainfall over the east coast states of Kelantan and Terengganu and then moves on to the southern states of Pahang and Johor.

This causes severe floods in several states almost every year and subsequently becomes the reason for our worry every monsoon season since I fear for the safety of those who reside in flood prone areas.

Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to ask all who live within flood prone areas to be particularly cautious throughout the monsoon season. Please take precautionary measures especially where there are children involved to avoid any untoward incidences. To ensure the safety of you and your family, I would recommend taking the necessary steps and evacuating to flood relief centres set up by relevant government agencies.

I also strongly advise paying attention to hygiene issues during the flood season in order to prevent the spread of diseases. Ensure that your food is not flood contaminated and thoroughly wash your hands before consumption of any food.

For those living in flood prone areas, I would advise you to be prepared for any possibility. Keep all important phone numbers of family members, neighbours and the closest police and fire stations that you can contact in case of any emergency. Be prepared to evacuate if advised to do so by the relevant agencies.

In order to help ease potential difficulties during this season, several government agencies are on standby to be mobilized. The government is also coordinating with various non -governmental organizations (NGO) to help those who are affected.

Finally, I would like to remind everyone to be continually vigilant of any new flood alerts that may arise during this current monsoon season. Updates can be easily obtained by visiting, a website by the Malaysian National Security Council.
