PEKAN, Jan 10 — The government plans to build a special Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) for Orang Asli children in the country with less stringent entry qualifications.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak said the special MRSM was being proposed in an effort to assist Orang Asli children to improve their performance in the academic field as well as their skills.
“The entry qualification can probably be relaxed or differ slightly from the ones for the normal MRSM.
“With the setting up of the special MRSM, it can at least overcome the problem of dropouts among Orang Asli children besides creating a spillover effect among the Orang Asli community itself,” he said.
He said this in his speech text which was read by Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah at the closing of the ‘Giat Mara’ Innovations Carnival, here, today.
At a press conference later, Saifuddin said there was only one Giat Mara learning centre which was built specifically for Orang Asli children at Damansara Damai, Kuala Lumpur currently.
“The centre is only the beginning, and to ensure that students from the Orang Asli community continue to excel in their studies, the government plans to set up a special MRSM for Orang Asli children,” he said.
