Special Awards In Honour Of Successful Women Can Inspire Others – Najib

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the introduction and presentation of the Prime Minister’s Woman Entrepreneur and Woman Social Activist Awards will mark the birth of more women icons in both fields.

The Prime Minister said the formal recognition awarded to successful women through the two awards was an initiative to honour women who have contributed to the nation’s economy as well as social development and inspire others to excel.

“I feel if there are awards like this to recognise ‘iconic figures’ who are successful as entrepreneurs and contribute to social development, it will inspire more women to achieve similar success.

“This is the kind of spirit that we want to initiate through the awards,” he said after presenting the 2011 Prime Minister’s Woman Entrepreneur and Woman Social Activist Awards here Sunday.

Najib said women today have been able to break away from the traditional role of mothers and housewives and enter a new phase of engineering social transformation in entrepreneurship, social programmes and political field.

During the awards ceremony Ken-Rich Chemical Production Sdn Bhd’s Chief Executive Officer Hooi Lai Lin received the 2011 Prime Minister’s Woman Entrepreneur of the year award while Cheshire Homes President Datin Paduka Khatijah Sulaiman @ Sulieman was awarded the 2011 Prime Minister’s Woman Social Activist of the year award.

Ken-Rich manufactures bleaches, car care products, car shampoo, concentrated powder, laundry detergents, floor cleaners, household cleaning detergents, hair shampoo, laundry softeners, personal care products, radiator coolant and toilet bowl cleaners.

Both recipients received RM100,000 cash, trophy and a watch respectively.

Hooi also received sponsorship for a women exporters development programme from Matrade while Khatijah received sponsorship to carry out social activities for two years from ‘Tabung Khas Perbendaharaan.

Najib added that women in Malaysia are fortunate since they need not face any pressure to fight for their rights, unlike in many other countries, including developed nations.

Also present was Najib’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Sime Darby Foundation chairman Tun Musa Hitam and the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur.
