SUNGAI PETANI, April 3 (Bernama) — The action by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in releasing 13 Internal Security Act (ISA) detainees shows he is a brave leader, said Umno vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
“This is important for the people to understand, we give room for them to express their views as long it does not affect the nation’s stability.
“It (the release of the detainees) augurs well for the nation and shows a courageous leadership that intends to bring about change,” he told reporters after meeting Barisan Nasional campaigners for the Bukit Selambau by-election in Ambangan Heights here Friday night.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the decision by Najib to free the 13 ISA detainees showed a style of leadership that was more open.
He said Najib’s willingness to also conduct a review of the ISA was proof that the Prime Minister was not worried about any political challenges.
“Usually when a person comes into power, he will ensure his powers are strengthened but Najib is not like that,” he told reporters after giving a ceramah in Taman Peruda here.
The 13 ordered to be released with immediate effect were two leaders of the Hindu Rights Action Force, seven members of Darul Islam, three foreigners and a member of Jemaah Islamiah.
Polling for the Bukit Selambau by-election is on April 7.
