KUALA LUMPUR: The subsidy rationalisation study is not about reducing subsidies but reducing the rate of increase in subsidies which will continue to be given, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“The subsidies are increasing from the current RM12bil to about RM20bil.

“This means we have to find an estimated RM8bil, which is not a small sum,” the Prime Minister told reporters Friday.

Najib said he would have to look at the discussions on the revision of the power tariffs before commenting on the matter.

(The National Economic Council discussed the revision Friday.)

“We will see first. I cannot say anything. Those are reports and it is up to them (to report on the speculation),” he said when asked on media reports that the tariff hike had already been decided.
