KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wants the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) to revise its junior development programme to further support the development of junior golfers and produce homegrown champions.
He said, after 50 years of watching the Malaysian Open Championship, he believed it would not be long before Malaysia could claim the title first hand.
“Of course, no Malaysian has ever won the Open, but we have come close…Vijay Singh, winner in 2001, is married to a Malaysian, and that’s good enough for us!…Malaysian Government is always in support of the development of our young talents,” he said in his speech at the prize-giving ceremony of 2011 Maybank Malaysian Open at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in Bukit Kiara here Sunday.
Najib also described the success of the event as the “great showcase for Malaysia” for it was watched by some 400 million people across 42 countries.
Italian teenager Matteo Manassero won the 2011 Maybank Malaysian Open title after a final round scores of four-under-par 68.
Manassero, who will be celebrating his 18th birthday on Tuesday, accumulated four-days scores of 16-under to win his second European Tour title.
