KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will grace the celebrations lined up for the Federal Territories Day at Dataran Merdeka on Jan 28.
The highlight of the celebrations will be a parade by 100 contingents from the private and government sectors.
Kuala Lumpur mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail said Najib’s presence will boost the spirit of 7,800 participants from non-governmental organizations, government departments and agencies and the private sector.
The celebrations, the eighth for all three Federal Territories — Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan — themed ‘Rakyat Bersatu Wilayah Persekutuan Maju’ is in line with the Prime Minister’s 1Malaysia concept.
“We hope our theme will encourage city folks to cooperate with the government for prosperity and development in the Federal Territories,” he said at a news conference here Tuesday.
Also held in conjunction with the celebration is the Kuala Lumpur International Short Film Festival, organised by the KLIS Network, from Jan 30 to Feb 1, at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) City Theatre.
The inaugural event received 1,000 entries from 75 countries, of which only 40 entries were short-listed.
Ahmad Fuad said DBKL will hold a Fly the Flag and Spot the Flag contests for the Federal Territories Day celebrations.
A Federal Territories Day Festival will also be held at the Dataran Merdeka next Saturday and Sunday with a variety of activities for the public.
Meanwhile, when asked of the declining number of cemeteries in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, he said DBKL had identified an area in Bukit Jalil for Muslim, Indian and Christian cemeteries but the project could not be executed as residents refused to move.
Ahmad Fuad said the DBKL was also continuously discussing with religious authorities to find a solution for the problem, including studies on a proposal for a double-decker cemetery.
