PM Reminds Ministers To Recognise Rights Of The People – Rais

JELEBU, Jan 23 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak constantly reminds Cabinet ministers to recognise the rights of the people in accordance with their respective race and religion, Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said Sunday.

He said Najib often advised the ministers that the unity of the various races could be undermined if the ministers imposed conditions on the development of any one race.

“We should never usurp any of these rights. The fundamental rights of any community are not barriers to unity,” he told reporters after opening a new hall of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Undang Jelebu, here.

Dr Rais was commenting on the call by Najib yesterday for private agencies and non-governmental organisations to work with the government to ensure that the needy were looked after.

He said the rights of every race in the country were guaranteed by the constitution and, as such, they should not be usurped.

In his speech earlier, Dr Rais said the distribution of free laptop computers by the government to students in the effort to disseminate knowledge of information technology was not for the purpose of abuse.

“We will be most grateful if the facility and knowledge of the Internet bring good,” he said.

Dr Rais said there were also negative elements on the Internet such as pornography but users should take care not to gamble away their culture to modernisation.

“It is hoped that our students will fathom computer knowledge and consider how to promote local songs to the world so that people will one day no longer whistle Western or Bollywood tunes,” he said.
