PM: No public funds used for 1Malaysia email project

PETALING JAYA: The 1Malaysia e-mail project is a private-sector initiative, which is not compulsory for the rakyat, assured the Prime Minister.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak tweeted early Wednesday morning that public funds were not involved in the project, which involves a RM50mil investment.

“Before I sleep , let me clarify that the 1Malaysia E Mail is a private sector project. No public money is involved n entirely voluntary,” he said in his tweet.

At the fifth progress update of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) in Putrajaya on Tuesday, Najib announced the initiative, which was one of the seven new projects in the ETP.

Tricubes Bhd is collaborating with Microsoft to develop the project, whereby Malaysians aged 18 and above will be given a unique official email account.

The company will spearhead the project that also includes the development of a web portal as a one-stop centre for government services providing value-added services such as social networking, checking of bills online and payments.
