LABIS: Felda settlers are no longer the jaguh kampung (village champions) they once were as they have grown to be middle-income earners who serve as role models for those living in the rural areas, the Prime Minister said.
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the settlers were now earning clean profits of up to RM3,000 each a month and could afford to live in bungalows and two-storey homes.
“The Felda people have become successful and this year Felda set aside RM1.6bil to fund various community projects for the more than 100,000 settlers nationwide,” he said, adding that the money – sourced from Felda itself – would go towards giving bonuses, training programmes, loans and infrastructure projects.
He was addressing about 10,000 settlers at Felda Chempelak, during his day trip to the Tenang constituency yesterday.
Najib also visited two other settlements, Felda Chempelak Barat and Felda Tenang.
The PM said the settlers could take pride in the fact that Felda has also gone international, with plants in the US and Canada.
“This is testament on how Felda has been successful,” he said.
