KUALA LUMPUR: Although the government promised scholarships to all top SPM students, not all can be sent overseas, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“We did not promise that all students would be sent overseas, sometimes the public did not understand,” he told reporters after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting Friday.
The Prime Minister said the government was committed to award Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships to all 8A+ and above SPM students to study locally or overseas.
Students given scholarships for diploma and matriculation courses would also be entitled for scholarships for degree studies, he said when commenting on claims of irregularities in the award of PSD scholarships.
He explained that some students were given diploma courses as offered by the universities.
“We assure that they will be sponsored to their first degree level.
“Some people misunderstood this (to mean) support will stop at diploma and not continue to the higher level, that is not true,” he said.
Najib added that the issues of awarding PSD scholarships had been discussed with various quarters including the MCA, MIC, Gerakan and others.
He said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz would oversee the scholarship matter.
