PEKAN, April 18 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today the people only rejected leaders who were not close to them but not the Barisan Nasional (BN).
As such, he said, BN leaders should work hard to get close to the people so as to ensure the coalition’s victory in the next general election.
He said his victory with a 26,464-vote majority in last year’s general election in the face of the dismal BN performance showed that the people were comfortable with leaders who were close to them.
“This means that the people do not reject the BN but only those leaders who are not close to them,” he said when addressing about 15,000 people who had turned up to welcome his homecoming as the prime minister in his Pekan parliamentary constituency, here.
Najib said BN leaders of today should emulate the leaders of the past who were always close to the people and gave priority to the interests of the people.
Najib said his late father, second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak, was always ready to roll up his pants or climb stairs to reach out to the people, and added that present-day leaders should humble themselves with the approach the people liked to get close to them.
At a news conference at his residence later, Najib said the concept of humbling oneself meant that leaders should always engage in activities which gave priority to the people and resolved their problems without waiting for the advent of the elections.
Earlier, in his address to the crowd, Najib said he was touched by the people’s reception and drew attention to a PAS poster at the Tanah Putih junction leading to Pekan which welcomed his appointment as the prime minister.
In his speech, Najib recalled his involvement in politics over the last 33 years, from the time he first stood for election in the Pekan constituency in 1976.
Najib’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob were also present at the function.
