KUANTAN: Umno division leaders have been reminded that they are not guaranteed victory in election just because of their party post, party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday.
“Times have changed and the political landscape of the country has changed. It is different from the ’70s and ’80s when holding a good post in the party guarantees a win in the elections.
“We need to be people-friendly and implement people-centric projects to win back the hearts of the people so that they will stand by us,” he said at a gathering to mark his homecoming as the sixth Prime Minister here yesterday.
He added that party members must make it a point to understand the peoples’ problems and find ways to overcome them because it would get the people closer to the party.
Gone were the days when winning the confidence of the people came easily for the party and Malaysians were now more aware of the current happenings and their democratic rights, he said.
“They know they hold the power and party members must take note of this fact.”
He also criticised the opposition for being fond of holding by-elections and selective as to which constituency it vacated.
A by-election is likely in Penanti, which fell vacant following the resignation of Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin from PKR.
