KUALA LUMPUR: Every effort is being taken to ensure that Malaysia weathers the worst of the adverse impact of the global economic malaise, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

“Our fundamentals are strong with healthy trade surpluses and international reserves of more than RM316.8bil and this will hold us in good stead for the rest of the year.

“Last November I announced a RM7bil stimulus package and I have also gone on record to say that we may consider introducing another fiscal package to stimulate the economy,” he said yesterday before launching the Chana Era cars – Era CV6, a hatchback and Era CM8, a multi-purpose vehicle.

Officially distributed by ChangAn Berjaya Auto Sdn Bhd, the vehicles are based on models from the ChangAn Auto Co. Ltd, the main car maker in China combined with European design and engineering and Japanese engine.

Najib, who is also the Finance Minister, said: “We are fully cognizant of the seriousness of the meltdown in the global economic and financial system. Every effort is being taken to weather the worst of the adverse impact.”

On the new entry of Chana Era cars into the auto market, Najib said he was pleased that ChangAn Berjaya Auto was unfazed in moving forward with their business underscoring the reality that the economy was still sound and steady.

He also lauded the move to make Malaysia the export hub for the right-hand drive vehicles for the Asean region.

The on-the-road price for Era CV6 starts from RM36,862 while the Era CM8 sells from RM38,888.
