PEKAN, Feb 4 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has called on Malaysians to continue instilling “esprit de corps” or spirit of comradeship among each of them so that there will be continuous unity and harmony in the country.
He said such spirit had long been existing among Malaysians, thanks to the foresights of the country’s previous leaders.
“This esprit de corps among the previous leaders, who built this country through the Federal Constitution and the social contract agreed by them when the country achieved its independence, is now translated into the 1Malaysia vision,” he said.
He was speaking at the launch of the 1Malaysia Ponggal Fest and the handing over of the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) for the Pekan parliamentary constituency in Dataran Pekan, here today.
Najib, who is Pekan member of parliament, said past leaders like Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Tun Sambanthan and Tun Abdul Razak had once sat together to draw up policies based on the philosophy of the country’s constitution.
“These policies paved the way for the values which we practice today, which allow each race in the country freedom of religion, freedom to practice their culture and freedom to practice their respective way of life,” Najib said.
He said such freedom was not provided for in other countries, including those in Southeast Asia, making Malaysia a country with a unique identity.
“The Ponggal Fest today is another tradition which makes Malaysia a unique and special country. This tradition is also a testimony of the esprit de corps of our previous leaders,” Najib said.
He described the event as historic as this was the first time the fest was held in Pekan.
Najib also handed over a replica of BR1M cheque to the representatives of 20,000 recipients in the constituency. Present were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob and about 5,000 constituents.
