GEORGE TOWN, Jan 27 (Bernama) — The number of customers at eateries participating in the ‘Menu Rakyat 1Malaysia’ (MR1M) launched by the prime minister five months ago, has increased by up to 30 per cent.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Deputy Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim said this showed that the MR1M, a government initiative to lessen consumers’ burden, was increasingly acceptable to the people.

“The MR1M has been getting encouraging public response and according to the latest information from the food outlet operators, their number of customers has gone up by 30 per cent, which will help them expand their business.

“Malaysians choose to patronise the MR1M eateries not only because the food served is reasonably priced, but is also of quality and tastes delicious,” she said after launching the MR1M at the Anjung Semarak cafe at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), here, today.

USM is the second public higher learning institution to offer the MR1M after Universiti Malaya where the programme was launched there by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Rohani said for this year, food outlet operators interested to participate in the MR1M programme could register for one of the two packages, that is, the breakfast or the lunch package, or both. In 2011, it was compulsory for them to offer both packages.

She said the ministry was also extending the programme to the cafeterias at government agencies and private institutions of higher learning.

“Up to Jan 12, 1,254 eatery operators nationwide had joined the BR1M programme and the ministry is targeting 3,000 participants by the year-end.”

On the menu price, Rohani said the highest for breakfast in the peninsula was RM2 and lunch, RM4.

In Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan, the maximum price for breakfast is RM2.50 and for lunch, RM5.

Rohani said the ministry was promoting the participating eateries via the portal, www.1pengguna.com with their locations and menu also listed.
