Non-Bumi response a 'good sign of support'

JOHOR BARU: Malaysians hungry for more secure unit trust schemes to invest in will have 5.5 billion new units to put their money in.
Permodalan Nasional Bhd is offering 3.3 billion units of Amanah Saham Malaysia and two billion units of Amanah Saham Wawasan 2020 to the public.

The ASM units will be on sale from today at 1,500 agents and offices of Amanah Saham Nasional Bhd nationwide, while the ASW 2020 will be available on April 27.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at the launching the Malaysia Unit Trust Week 2009 here yesterday.

Najib said the new units, available to all communities, were being offered because of the overwhelming response from the public in the past.

“The ASW 2020, introduced in 1996, had proven the government wants equal participation from the people irrespective of race or religion. The overwhelming response to ASW 2020 had brought about the introduction of ASM in 2000.

“I am proud that non-Bumiputeras have shown confidence in PNB. Their good response to additional units is an endorsement of and support for the PNB and government.”

To ensure more people can invest in the unit trusts, purchases will be capped at 20,000 units per person.

The maximum purchase limit for ASM is applicable between today and July 29,and ASW 2020 between April 27 and May 6.

Half of the ASM units will be for Bumiputeras, 30 per cent for Chinese, 15 per cent for Indians and five per cent for the people of other races. ASM units reserved for any race that remain unsold after July 20 will be open for sale to others.

It is, however, unlikely that the units won’t be snapped up, especially for the non-Bumiputera units as these had always been sold within a day or two.

The recently launched RM2.5 billion sukuk bonds were sold out within two days.

The Finance Ministry added another RM2.5 billion to the savings bonds using the allocation of the second batch. The bonds give an annual dividend of five per cent.

For ASW 2020 units, the quota is 51 per cent for Bumiputeras and 49 per cent for non-Bumiputeras.

Malaysians aged 6 months and above can buy the ASM and ASW 2020 units.

Sale counters at ASNB and Pos Malaysia will be open from 8am to 4pm, while agents such as CIMB, Maybank and RHB Bank will begin sale from 9.15am.

Counters at the Malaysia Unit Trust Week near Plaza Angsana here will be open from 10am to 6pm, including Saturday and Sunday.
