SINTOK: It was double joy for Tun Rahah Mohd Noah as she was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Education on the day her son Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak took over the helm of Umno.
Rahah received the honorary doctorate from the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah, at the Universiti Utara Malaysia’s (UUM) Convocation Day yesterday. The Sultan is the chancellor of the university.
The 76-year-old widow of the country’s second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak, in her speech, said the award was an honour to all mothers who helped to develop the human capital of the country.
“As women did not have enough chance to pursue their studies before the country’s independence, women today must take the opportunity to improve their knowledge and become better Malaysians,” she said.
She added that it was also the role of parents to work with schools to produce human capital that was capable of competing in the workforce.
Rahah added that the development of the country’s education system had become a foundation to produce quality individuals.
The Sultan also presented honorary Doctorates in Communication to the Kedah Malay Assembly Hall chairman Tan Sri Khalid Abdullah and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan’s Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohd Nawi Ab Rahman.
A total of 4,463 students will receive their scrolls during the three-day convocation, which ends tomorrow.
