KUANTAN: A restaurant near here became the assembly point for a group of people who turned up to witness the swearing-in of the country’s sixth Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
They were not just ordinary citizens but Najib’s staunch grassroots supporters.
Led by Pekan Umno division deputy chief Datuk Ishak Muhammad, they gathered as early as 7am to witness the historic moment, just like millions of other Malaysians nationwide.
About 50 Youth leaders and party members mostly from the Pekan division, which is headed by Najib, turned up at the restaurant in Jaya Gading near here to watch the live telecast.
The group raised their hands in the air to mark their approval and support and shouted “Hidup Najib, Hidup Umno†before continuing with their breakfast and discussion.
When met later, Ishak, who is also the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman, said: â€We have been waiting for this moment for so long and decided to watch the historic moment together at a restaurant.â€
Ishak said he hoped that with Najib at the helm, the party would regain its support and confidence to manage the country.
Gudang Rasau Umno Youth chief Afzanizam Abd Hamid said they were elated to be able to witness the ceremony together at a convenient location.
“Pekan residents like myself are rejoicing for a second time and look forward to Najib following the footsteps of his late father Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, to bring more development,†he said.
In Putrajaya, many people were glued to their TV sets either in their own living rooms or offices.
Restaurants which turned on their TV sets were also rewarded as passers-by made a beeline to these outlets to catch the live telecast of Najib being sworn in before Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Negara on RTM1.
