PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will meet with the Malaysian Tigers football team on Wednesday to congratulate the players’ on their AFF Suzuki Cup win last month.
He said he had personally experienced how sports, especially football, can unite people.
“The energy that night, while sitting among fellow Malaysians at Jalan Bukit Bintang, was palpable and one couldn’t help but be swept up in it,” he said yesterday in his first blog posting for the year.
Najib praised the team’s success as largely responsible for carrying Malaysians into 2011 in a buoyant mood adding the players were the future of national football and had the potential to revive the sport domestically.
“Our team has already been given a compliment by a Manchester United player.
“They should take this as motivation to improve,” he said, adding that focus, discipline and good team culture was essential for the team to rise to great standards.
“It could be an exciting year for this much loved sport in Malaysia,” he said, adding that the Malaysia Cup had a brand new champion in Kelantan, who lifted the cup for the first time last year.
Najib also sent his new year wishes to his readers.
“I hope everyone ushered in the New Year with great enthusiasm and a positive outlook on the next twelve months,” he said.
