KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak will chair his first Barisan Nasional supreme council meeting tomorrow — and what a meeting it will be.
Top on the agenda: whether the coalition will contest the Penanti by-election and the current Perak impasse.
He is also expected to explain 1Malaysia to component party chiefs and outline his strategies for the coalition.
Sources said the meeting would get feedback from BN leaders on contesting the May 31 by-election, looking into the pros and cons as currently, BN leaders are divided over contesting the state seat.
Najib had said last month that he did not rule out BN skipping the by-election.
MCA favours not contesting Penanti as it might cool the country’s hot political climate.
However, Penang Umno is keen for a contest and has forwarded its list of candidates to the party leadership.
The Penanti state seat fell vacant after former Penang deputy chief minister (I) Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin quit on April 16.
He was alleged to have been involved in the illegal quarry operations in Seberang Prai last year.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission later said there was insufficient evidence to charge him.
On the Perak impasse, the council is likely to discuss Najib’s proposal to meet Pakatan Rakyat to solve the crisis.
Pakatan leaders had shown their willingness to talk with BN over the matter but stressed there must not be any “preconditions”.
