KUCHING: Barisan Nasional component parties should work together to ensure the coalition wins in the Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau by-elections regardless of which party the candidates belong to, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
With Barisan parties reportedly tussling for the seats, he said the difference of opinion among the parties as to who should field a candidate was nothing new.
“In previous by-elections and even during the general election, when the seat is in a mixed constituency, you will get the component parties vying to represent the seat,” he told reporters after handing out financial assistance to mission schools in Sabah and Sarawak at SMK St Thomas here Thursday.
“Ultimately, once the decision is made by the chairman of Barisan, everyone should abide by the decision and work to make sure that the Barisan candidate wins irrespective of which party the candidate comes from.”
On the possibility of both by-elections being held simulatenously, Najib said Barisan’s election machinery would be able to cope.
“We can manage our machinery in both constituencies simultaneously,” he said, adding that Barisan would accept the Election Commission’s decision on the dates of the by-elections.
