Najib: Serving the people the priority

KUALA LUMPUR: Don’t be too engrossed in winning party positions that Umno loses the support of the people in leading the nation.

In giving this advice, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak noted that Umno members spent a lot of effort to secure “dream positions” but forget that it would be useless if the party did not hold any power.

“The most important thing is for Umno to serve the rakyat. Whatever is close to the hearts of Malaysians, Umno must be their champion,” he said when officiating an Umno Club leadership course yesterday.

“A position should be the means to an end and not the end itself,” he added.

Najib said there were incidents of members “cutting each other off” while fighting for party posts and this led to some members joining the opposition.

“But they do this not because they really want to join the Opposition but because there were no posts for them in Umno,” he added.

He said there was a need for the party to examine its strengths and weaknesses, especially in the five states ruled by Pakatan Rakyat.

“We cannot accept the current status quo and be satisfied with just holding the post of an Umno division head in a state that is ruled by somebody else,” he said, adding that the next general election would be a great test apart from the upcoming by-elections.
