BANGKOK, Oct 11 (Bernama) — Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin would be an ideal combination for the leadership of the country with their vast experiences at both state and federal levels, said Agriculture and Agro Based Industry Minister, Datuk Mustapa Mohamed.

He said Malaysia deserved good leaders as the country has one of the richest resources in the world and both are tested leaders with enough preparation to lead the country when Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi stepped down in March next year.

“Umno is the backbone of the government and it needs capable leaders. The leaders must be intellectuals, gone through the mill and ready to face challenges in leading the country,” said Mustapa, who is here on a working visit.

He was asked to comment about Najib and Muhyiddin’s decision to vie for the president and deputy president of Umno respectively in the party’s election next year.

While Najib and Muhyiddin looked to be the favourites, Mustapa said any other Umno leader could contest the top spots in line with the party’s democracy process.

“But we have to be rational and not emotional when it comes to future of the country. We are not talking about sentiments,” he said.

Mustapa said Najib had more than 30 years of experience in the government and chaired numerous Cabinet-level committees.

On the deputy president’s post, Mustapa said as the winner would be become the deputy prime minister, it was important to have the best and proven candidate than any ordinary one.

“In Malaysia, a deputy prime minister has a very important responsibility and can be come the prime minister one day. In this respect, Muhyiddin has vast experience, having been a menteri besar and minister at several ministries,” he said.

Asked if he would vie for any top posts in the party, Mustapa said he would be happy to contest just a Supreme Council seat.

He said his Jeli Umno division had yet to fix its divisional meeting, adding he would consult other division leaders before making a decision on their choice of candidates for all the top posts in the Umno.
