MUAR, Oct 12 (Bernama) — Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has asked the people not to label Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is expected to become prime minister in March, as a leader who will continue the ‘Mahathirism’ policy.
He said such perception was unnecessary as the Umno deputy president had a long experience in government administration.
“Because of his long experience in government, I believe he has his own stand and vision,” Muhyiddin told reporters after opening the Pagoh Umno division delegates’ conference at Dewan Seri Pekembar in Pagoh, here Sunday.
He was confident that Najib could deal with the difficult challenges faced by the country in the next four years leading to the 13th general election in 2013.
He also believed that Najib would continue with programmes to strengthen Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno which were drawn up by the leaders when it was obvious from the last March 8 general election results that support for BN had declined.
Besides that, he said, efforts were also being made to build closer cooperation among BN component parties and on how Umno could work closely with the other components so that BN would remain in power after the next general election.
Muhyiddin believed that Najib would also consider the issue of wealth distribution which had been raised by various quarters who also alleged unfairness in the distribution.
“We must consider public sentiments and work at winning back their confidence in BN, not just by doing some soul searching to realise our weaknesses and correct them, but also to follow up with ‘political dividends’ for the party.
“We also need to improve relations between parties and between the races. I believe Datuk Seri Najib will give attention to these matters,” he said.
