Najib Calls For Extraordinary Work Formula To Achieve Extraordinary Victory

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) — Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Tuesday raised the curtain for the Umno General Assembly 2011 by describing a formula to ensure Barisan Nasional’s (BN) victory in the 13th general election.

Observers feel the formula which calls for “extraordinary work to get an extraordinary victory” should be the main topic of debate during the assembly so that its meaning would be thoroughly understood by the delegates.

Umno Veteran Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Shamsuddin, said it was not easy to do extraordinary things such as asking a division head to voluntarily withdraw from being a candidate for the general election.

He said what constituted extraordinary work was withdrawing when they were aware the people had rejected their leadership and giving their support to the candidates picked by the president, because they loved the party.

Abdul Aziz said another extraordinary work was asking potential candidates from among non-division leaders not to contest for leaders’ posts in the divisions.

He said one fact that should be accepted by Umno leaders was that there were people’s representatives from among Umno division leaders who were not liked by the people.

“There are people’s representatives who are division heads and they are not liked by the people, although they are supported by Umno members, to remain as Umno division heads. “Such people’s representatives must be willing to make sacrifices and make way for potential candidates who are liked by the people. They should realise that Umno membership does not represent all the voters and as such they do not decide victory in the general election,” he said.

Supreme Council member Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman said the delegates should use the extraordinary work formula as a theme for debate as the president had reminded them that it was a formula for BN’s success.

He said, based on the formula, all Umno leaders must be prepared to set aside personal interests.

Zainal said the Umno leadership would place a candidate from outside if there were no winnable candidates in a division and all must work to ensure that the candidates won, based on the spirit of party.

“It is time we change, get rid of the culture of chopping off opponents and this is what Najib meant by political transformation. The president has reminded that the 13th general election is going to be a very challenging one and it is going to need extraordinary work,” he said.

Penang BN secretary Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the delegates need to understand better as to what was meant by winnable candidates and they should debate the new method of picking candidates for the general election so that all would understand it more profoundly.

He said, based on the formula ‘winnable candidate’, all party members were asked to accept general election candidates contesting on the BN ticket although the potential candidates were not from among leaders they liked.

“This extraordinary work does require a very big sacrifice and because of this the president stressed love for the party must be given priority over personal interest,” he said.
