PARIT BUNTAR, Jan 14 (Bernama) — Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has brought cheers to residents here when he approved a RM450 million flood mitigation project and a hospital for the Kerian District.

The prime minister said the flood mitigation project for the flood-prone Kerian District was proposed by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

Najib said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment had called tenders for the first phase of the project and the successful bidder would be known soon.

The project entails the construction of embankments on both banks of Sungai Kerian and Sungai Kurau, and a seawall to prevent salt water from inundating padi fields, he told reporters after launching the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen’s Day here Saturday.

On the district hospital, Najib said it would be a 300-bed hospital but the cost had yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, Zambry said the approval for the flood mitigation project proved that the federal government was concern with the plight of the people who had to endure flooding during rainy seasons as it affected their livelihood.
