PUTRAJAYA: PAS’ decision to call off the unity talks with Umno has no effect on the Barisan Nasional.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that even without the unity government, Barisan was still able to administer the country and carry out its agenda to bring about changes for the benefit of the rakyat.

“The issue of a weak government does not arise because it is them (PAS) that invited us for the unity government talks.

“We have no problems running the country. We are still able to carry out the agenda of change that has been outlined. The Government is still strong and sound,” he said when asked about Pakatan Rakyat’s decision to reject the unity government concept.

In a joint statement, the three leaders of PKR, PAS and DAP reiterated their commitment to strengthening the alliance following a meeting on the unity government issue which was initiated by PAS.

Pakatan rejected the idea of forming a unity government with Umno and Barisan as it claimed it was a malicious and desperate attempt to compromise the integrity of the increasingly popular alliance.

Najib, who is also Umno president, said that the idea of forming a unity government had come from PAS and not Umno, adding that the party accepted the idea with “an open mind and attitude” for the benefit of the people.

“We are always firm in our opinion that whatever is good for the country and the people must be done even if the suggestion or idea comes from the opposition,” he said.

He said that what was important was for both sides to manage differences and to always have the nation’s interest in mind.

Asked if Umno would entertain future requests to hold such talks again, Najib replied: “Anything is possible in politics.”
