KANGAR, Jan 27 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak arrived here today for a day-long visit to Perlis and made the Behor Lateh day market his first stop.
The market, in operation since March 1991 and run by the B-1 MADA Kayang Area Farmers Organisation, is frequented by shoppers on Fridays and Sundays.
Upon arriving there at 10.15 am, Najib was greeted by Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu, former menteri besar Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim, and other state as well as Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders.
The prime minister visited the stalls at the market, better known among the local people as “nat”, and chatted with the traders and shoppers.
Najib had breakfast at one of the stalls. He was served “laksa”, “roti jala”, “pulut udang” and “serabai” (a type of pancake).
In his address to the traders, Najib announced a RM1.1-million allocation to build a roof for the estimated 100 stalls at the market spread over 0.5 hectares.
He said the BN government recognised the needs of the people and strived to provide the necessary amenities, adding that he hoped that the people would appreciate the contributions of the government through the various programmes, including the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M).
“The aid is not restricted to huge projects but also takes into account the plight of the ordinary people,” he said.
The prime minister is also scheduled to meet farmers from Perlis at the Simpang Empat multipurpose hall during a walkabout later.
He will attend Friday prayers at the Bongor Kudong Mosque in Simpang Empat and meet Felda settlers at Felda Chuping.
