SIPITANG (Sabah), Feb 16 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak arrived here today to perform the ground-breaking for Petronas’ RM4.5-billion Sabah Ammonia Urea (SAMUR) project as part of his two-day visit to Sabah beginning today.

The prime minister, who was accompanied by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, received a warm welcome from about 10,000 guests and people who had been waiting at the facility since 8 am.

Located in the Sipitang Oil and Industrial Park, the mammoth development is expected to be operational in 2015 and serve as a catalyst for the growth of Sipitang.

The SAMUR project consists of a urea plant, a granulation plant and an ammonia plant, as well as utilities and jetty facilities.

The ground-breaking marks an important milestone for Petronas in its continuous effort to develop and add value to Malaysia’s oil and gas resources in line with the government’s economic development and transformation initiatives.

Later today, Najib will be in the Sabah capital of Kota Kinabalu where he is scheduled to launch the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) “Open Day – Corridors and Regional Cities’ Programme” at the Magellan Sutera Harbour.

The Corridors and Regional Cities Lab initiative is designed to make the most of and build on Sabah’s existing programmes as well as align the SDC and Kota Kinabalu City initiatives.

The lab is also aligned with the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and will help expedite the economic transformation process in Sabah.

Najib will also have an audience with Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at Istana Negeri.

The prime minister is also scheduled to meet Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders in the evening at the Magellan Sutera Hotel and wrap up his itinerary for today.

Tomorrow, he is scheduled to visit Lahad Datu.
