The new Umno president would take over the prime minister’s post from Abdullah in the near future, with Abdullah saying he would seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on Thursday to convey his intention to relinquish the post.
“I know it is not easy to relinquish the post of prime minister… it is already difficult to let go of the post at the branch level, let alone the highest post in the party,” he said in his acceptance speech as the new Umno president at the Umno General Assembly here today.
He said that he and Abdullah had made discussions, sometimes for hours, on the leadership transition.
“No one knows about this and I have never talked about it until today. I’m touched because the prime minister carried out the discussion in a friendly manner, to the extent that when I came for the discussions, Pak Lah would discuss with his wife about the food I like,” he said.
