JOHOR BAHARU, March 9 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today continued his ‘walkabout’ programme by visiting Kampung Melayu Majidee, here and announcing a RM20 million allocation to build a new market.

Najib, who is on a two-day visit to the city, made the announcement after spending about an hour visiting the market and business area in Kampung Melayu Majidee.

Before going on the walkabout, the Prime Minister, who arrived at Kampung Melayu Majidee at about 1.20pm, performed Friday prayer at the mosque there accompanied by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, the Member of Parliament for Johor Baharu, Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad, members of the State Executive Council and government officials.

Najib and his entourage then walked to the business area in the kampung to observe the situation there and to have a ‘chit-chat’ with the traders there including at the market place.

The Prime Minister and his entourage concluded the walkabout by dropping at the Restoran Warisan Teratak Bonda and having ‘murtabak’.

In his short speech at the restaurant, Najib said he was happy with the warm welcome accorded to him and that he was confident the settlement would be a Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold.

He said the people there deserved a new market as the existing one was now dilapidated.

“I was taken to the dilapidated market only to realise that there is a ‘special’ reason for the visit. I should not have gone there, but Datuk Shahrir (Shahrir Abdul Samad) took me there to consider an allocation for a new market.

“During the walk, Datuk Shahrir had whispered to me, so I approved the new market for the kampung with an allocation of RM20 million,” he said to loud applause from the audience.

Meanwhile in his speech, Shahrir said the new market was very necessary as the existing one was more than 20 years old and no longer suitable to the current environment.
