KUALA LUMPUR: Umno members must give party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak a full mandate to ensure the party’s victory in the next general election.
Party vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was important that members had faith in Najib and not take the general election lightly as it would be Umno’s toughest to date.
“Umno members at the division and grassroots levels should work extraordinarily hard as the challenges in the 13th general election will also be extraordinary,” Zahid said after a closed-door briefing to delegates by Najib, who is also prime minister, here yesterday.
Zahid added that all internal problems, such as sabotage attempts and back-stabbing, must be stopped.
It was important for members to respect party leaders and stay united in the selection of winnable candidates.
“If the candidate chosen by the division is not winnable, then the party leadership will chose one who they think has a better chance of winning.”
Another party vice-president, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, said it was important for members to give a full mandate to Najib to select winnable candidates.
“They should put the party’s success first instead of aiming for certain individuals to win.”
Hishammuddin expressed hope that the messages conveyed by the party president would be translated into action after the assembly.
Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, another Umno vice-president, said members should work hard to ensure Umno won big in the general election.
“We must get a comfortable win so that all the government’s transformation plans can be implemented.”
