KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has proposed a revision of the Athletes Incentive Scheme (Shakam) cash rewards for next year’s edition.

“The cash incentive for individual gold medallist will be raised by 100 per cent to RM20,000 and the athlete will get another RM10,000 for subsequent gold medal won.

“We hope the revised incentives will help boost the spirit of our athletes,” he said at the presentation of Shakam awards to national athletes who competed at the Indonesian SEA Games at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara here Friday.

Under the Shakam scheme, a gold medallist will get RM10,000 and another RM5,000 for a subsequent gold medal won.

The prime minister said members of winning teams, including those at the recent SEA Games, would be getting RM5,000 each, instead of RM2,000.

Commenting on the announcement, National Sports Council director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong said it showed the prime minister’s concern on the welfare of athletes.

“However, athletes should take heed of the prime minister’s advice that they should not be complacent with their gold medal feats at the recent SEA Games,” he added.

For national shooter Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi, the increase in the quantum of the incentives was a recognition to the sacrifices made by national athletes.

“We are not after the prize money alone but also an appreciation from the government and the people to all the hard work and agony that we had endured,” he said.

For national goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, the new incentive would raise the spirit of footballers as they would defending the Suzuki Cup title next year where Malaysia and Thailand would co-host the tournament.
