SBY calls Najib over Ambalat

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Tuesday to forge the use of dialogue to settle a dispute over oil and gas-rich Ambalat maritime territory.

Yudhoyono said the telephone conversation between the two leaders, which began at 12:00 noon, was aimed at preventing acts of provocation that might worsen the tension.

“Just now I communicated with Prime Minister Najib Razak to have this problem managed properly so that it would not trigger new problems, let alone those that may disrupt our bilateral relations,” Yudhoyono said in Semarang.

The President hoped the direct contact would help the two countries resolve the dispute in a quick, effective and peaceful manner.

“I have told him about our stance. As it is a matter of sovereignty, we are obliged to defend it. We have chosen negotiation and it is now underway. I expressed my expectation to negotiators the talks could be completed more quickly without much trouble,” he said.
