KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 29, 2011): The delegates at the 2011 Umno General Assembly were told to put aside their differences and work towards securing a big win in the next general election.
In a joint press conference today, the party’s three vice-presidents – Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said that the next general election is crucial.
“This coming election, we must win with a comfortable win to ensure the (government’s) transformation plans can be done,” said Mohd Shafie.
Earlier the delegates received a closed-door briefing from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak who is also the party president.
Ahmad Zahid said Najib had advised the delegates to prioritise the party’s agenda and not focus on personal interests.
“He (Najib) advised the candidates at all levels to be united and put aside the differences. If there are internal conflicts among each other, or elements of sabotage … It must all be put aside.
“The attention must be given to the party’s agenda and not individuals’ agendas,” he said.
On the question of winnable candidates from the party, Hishammuddin said that it should be left to the leadership level to ensure the party wins big.
Ahmad Zahid said that priority will be given to the leadership hierarchy when selecting candidates but stressed that is secondary as the unity among the members must be strengthened.
“In the top leadership level, there is no team, there is only one team- the Umno team. That is why he (Najib) has said that in the divisional and branch level, there should only be one team.
“They (members) must forget the quarrels in the past and focus on unity to win the next general election,” said Ahmad Zahid.
When asked about complaints that there are some candidates who are winnable but are not given the chance, Ahmad Zahid said the selecting of such candidates was based on the party’s own research and feedback.
“Everyone can feel they can win but we have our own research and feedback received from various sources and based on that, we decide,” he said.
The Umno General assembly which started today will end on Dec 3. About 5,447 delegates are expected to attend the event at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).
