KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will look into a request asking for assistance from the United Nations to allow aid ships to travel unhindered in the Mediterranean Sea to Gaza.
The Prime Minister said the request was made by members of the Lifeline4Gaza (LL4G) Malaysian aid team, who will leave for Gaza soon.
Najib said it was important that the aid flotilla reached the Palestinians without harassment. He added that the Palestinian issue was something close to his heart and that he would do whatever he could to help them.
“As long as the Palestinian people are oppressed, we will take it upon ourselves to fight for them.
“We should, even if the world does not,” Najib said during a ceremony to see off the team at the Cheras Badminton Stadium last night.
LL4G chairman Noorazman Mohd Samsuddin said the UN should check the aid ships to verify that the flotilla was carrying aid for the Palestinians.
Noorazman will travel to Gaza with the 10-member Malaysian team, which includes Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, PAS central committee member Khalid Abd Samad and representatives from six NGOs.
The flotilla of the International Freedom Flotilla 11, which comprises 600 volunteers in 13 international ships, is slated to sail from June 27.
It was reported last month that the Malaysian vessel MV Finch was fired upon and had to withdraw to Egyptian waters.
