Najib Visits Father's Grave

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 (Bernama) — New Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak made a visit to the grave of his father Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysia’s second prime minister, at the National Mausoleum after performing Friday prayers at the National Mosque here Friday.

Najib, in pink Baju Melayu attire, his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, mother Tun Rahah Noah, his four siblings, Ahmad Johari, Mohamad Nizam, Mohamad Nazim and Mohamad Nazir and other family members spent about an hour at the grave.

Razak became Malaysia’s second prime minister on Sept 22, 1970 but died of leukemia while still in office on Jan 14, 1976.

Najib who initially was seen to be calm, was overcome with emotion when the Chief Imam of the National Mosque Tan Sri Syaikh Ismail Muhammad began reciting prayers.

Following the prayers, Rahah sprinkled scented water on Razak’s grave followed by Najib, Rosmah and the rest of the family members.

Najib’s predecessor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, who were also present, joined Najib’s family in sprinkling scented water on Razak’s grave.

Malaysia’s third prime minister Tun Hussein Onn and deputy prime ministers Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman and Tun Ghafar Baba are also buried at the mausoleum.

Earlier, Najib, Abdullah and a congregation of about 5,000 people had performed Friday prayers at the National Mosque. The prayers were led by Syaikh Ismail.

Prior to attending the Friday prayers, Najib had met his mother at here Jalan Eaton home here to get her blessings on his appointment as the new prime minister of Malaysia today.

He was accompanied by his wife and children.
