GEORGE TOWN, Dec 20 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Monday urged the media to play the role as a promoter of moderation “to take back the centre” and reclaim the agenda for peace and pragmatism.

He said the movement of the moderates could marginalise the extremists, and that the media had a significant role to play in this quest.

“With collective determination, we can build a more rational, secure and equitable world. As media messages about the majority who seek peace and moderation spread around the globe, this new world is indeed within our reach,” he said at the opening of the 43rd International Convention of the World Chinese Language Press Institute, here.

This is the fifth time the convention of the World Chinese Language Press Institute has been held in Malaysia.

Also present at the opening ceremony were the President of the World Chinese Language Press Institute Tan Sri Tiong Hiew King, Chairman of the All-China Journalists Association Tian Cong Ming, Chairman of Kwong Wah Yit Poh Press Ong Gim Huat and MCA Deputy President and Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Najib said the media should function as a watchtower for change and take on an aggressive role and be capable of holding governments, companies, communities and individuals to account.

“Global media organisations should hold us accountable to work towards this goal, as they should hold all governments accountable in providing security and better lives for their people,” he added.

Najib also suggested that the media act as a catalyst for development, especially within the context of developing countries.

“In Malaysia, for example, we have been taking proactive steps to achieve our aspiration to become a high-income nation by the year 2020.

“To support this objective, I have introduced programmes to accelerate economic growth through a New Economic Model and the Economic Transformation Programme,” he said.

Najib said the media should explain the news stories clearly and accurately communicate the importance of economic and social programmes to improve citizens’ lives.

“Difficult economic concepts will need to be defined in everyday language, and explanations shared on how short-term changes can lead to long-term benefits.

“In this way, the media can truly serve as a catalyst for development,” he added.
