KUCHING, Dec 10 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today paid tribute to Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam for his contribution to politics and government under the Barisan Nasional (BN).
He said Dr Chan, 75, who is president of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and a former Sarawak deputy chief minister, had done a lot for the people and state of Sarawak.
“Dr Chan will now have more time with his family. We in the BN most appreciate his services,” Najib said when launching a book, “What Now”, written by the SUPP president.
Dr Chan will not be contesting in the party elections set for tomorrow.
The SUPP leader said he is now spending more time with his family and engaging in writing.
He said that with the support of his family, he would write books which can be an inspiration for the future generations. He has four daughters and 11 grandchildren.
Dr Chan became assistant secretary-general of SUPP in 1980 and served as deputy chairman from 1982 to 1989 and as secretary-general from 1990 to 1996. He became SUPP president in 1996 and has held the post until today.
He served as the assemblyman for Piasau from 1991 to 2011 when he was defeated by a DAP candidate.
Dr Chan has held the posts of minister of finance and public utilities; minister of industrial development; minister of modernisation of agriculture and minister of tourism and heritage.
