KUALA LUMPUR: Social transformation is the toughest challenge the nation currently faces, on top of the various changes taking place, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said the transformation programmes for government, economy and political practices could not be complete without social transformation.

“That is the foremost challenge. To change the attitudes and values of society is not easy.

“What is being done by the (Women, Family and Community Development) Ministry and Government is to form a balanced society that is fair, just, considerate and caring,” Najib said when opening the ministry’s 10th anniversary celebrations at the Putra World Trade Centre yesterday.

He added that Malaysia must be a society that cared for those in need, with family problems or born unfortunate.

He said the country’s wealth should not just belong to the successful and able but also to the less fortunate.

Najib said the Government has made the disabled, poor and single parents its biggest target groups.

He added that the Government’s target to achieve a 30% women’s participation in decision-making positions in the private and public sectors showed that gender discrimination did not arise in Malaysia.
