Najib May Become Prime Minister on April 4, Malaysiakini Says

March 20 (Bloomberg) — Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Najib Razak, is expected to be sworn in as the country’s sixth premier on April 4, the Malaysiakini news service reported on its Web site today, without identifying sources.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi may step down on April 2, five days after he is expected to resign as the ruling party’s leader at the United Malays National Organisation general assembly, paving the way for Najib, who will take over the position unopposed, the report said.

Party elections will be held during the three-day general assembly beginning March 26, the report said. The president of Umno is traditionally the prime minister of Malaysia.
