NUSAJAYA: Iskandar Malaysia has been given the thumbs up by the prime minister, who feels that the corridor in still in the lead compared with other corridors in the country.
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Iskandar was leading because of several factors, including its proximity to Singapore and focus on economic activities.
“Iskandar also plays a complementary role between Malaysia and Singapore.
“I’m really impressed with the progress made by Iskandar especially after my aerial tour of the development areas,” Najib told a press conference to mark Iskandar’s fifth anniversary at Puteri Harbour here yesterday.
He said the investments committed so far stood at RM77bil, having surpassed the five-year target of RM47bil.
“I have no doubt that Iskandar will be a vanguard for Malaysia and the region in the years ahead,” he said, adding that Iskandar was a model for other regional developments.
Najib added that all the projects in Iskandar were in the various stages of implementation and were progressing well.
Asked if Iskandar’s growth in the next five years might be hampered by the economic slowdown in the Eurozone and United States, the prime minister was optimistic that Iskandar would be able to weather it.
He said the Government was fully committed to the development of Iskandar and this is backed by a RM6bil allocation for infrastructure projects under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
He had earlier witnessed the exchange of documents between 12 partners and investors totalling RM1.73bil.
